Step 6,
Observing feelings
At times your mind
might be heavy with some emotional feeling. I had a
professor during my psychology program practicum that
had this theory that there are 5 feelings. Well, 6. It's
a simple way to look at them - so I'll repeat it here.
The acronym for
the feelings was "F-L-A-S-H".
Fear, Love, Anger,
Sad, Happy. All feelings, no matter how complicated can
be narrowed down to one or two of these basic feelings.
Fear is about the future. Love is about the past,
present and future. Sadness is about the present and the
past. Happiness is about the present. Anger is about the
present.
Emotional feelings
have a very strong presence in the mind. They can rule
the mind for long periods of time, influencing our
behavior, actions, decisions over the course of a day or
a lifetime. Feelings are easy to hold onto - and yet
what are they really? What are they made of? What
substance? Where do they begin? How do they end?
Feeling arises
depending on contact with sensory objects. There is no
feeling in the eye, ears, nose, fingers... Only when
there is an object present - is there able to be
feeling.
5 factors that
produce a feeling:
1. Sense
2. Sensory object
3. Contact
4. Consciousness
5. A feeling can
arise.
Contact can arise in two places, the senses and in the
mind.
